New Experiences & Amazing Opportunities

My pre-internship semester is underway and is in no way an ordinary semester. A normal pre-internship semester at the University of Regina would consist of taking 4 classes at the university which would all end 3 weeks before the end of the semester and the final 3 weeks would be spent in a high school with a partner pre-intern where the two of you would gain experience in the classroom and teaching.

This semester the 7 Business Education majors and 23 English majors have moved 3 of their 4 classes out of the university and into a local high school. We spend 2 hours every Monday & Wednesday together as a whole group and split into our major subject groups for 4 hours on Tuesdays & Thursdays. Over the past 2 weeks that we have been at the school we have spent most of our time together as one big group, taken tours, and met a lot of the staff. Right now the high school students are finishing off their semester and beginning finals so we will still have one more week before we begin to really integrate into the school.

Once the students begin the second semester, we will be given the opportunity to spend time in classes and interacting with the students and staff. The way I see it, regardless of how this experience pans out, spending time in a high school is an amazing opportunity and a better learning experience than if we were to be taking classes at the university. At the end of our semester we will still be using our 3 week block to spend time in another school and gaining more teaching experience.

I am really enjoying my time in the school so far even though I have not yet spent any time in a classroom with students. I believe that teaching means adapting and being able to accept and roll with changes. This semester is unlike anything I have ever experienced, it is unlike anything my professors have ever experienced and we are all learning as we go.

One of our professors described the experience as, “we are building the plane as we are flying over the ocean”. I think this is a great description of what this semester has in store for us.
